Great post. Although I get bored with the whole "who was Shakespeare?" thing. So I won't recommend Bill Bryson's book to you. I think there's more mileage in the detective work to be found in - assuming he did write his plays - how they ended up as they did. Bastardised versions, themes he nicked from other plays, sections that nobody can understand at all. I find all that more exciting, and "Macbeth" is a good one for this. All the debate about if the play was edited down from a much longer work is very fascinating, along with the "how many children had Lady Macbeth" thing and the historical (in)accuracy.
