It's rare, but there are times when I miss Colorado: the Sixteenth Street Mall, the mountains, the head-spinningly thin atmosphere, and, of course, the Tattered Cover Bookstore. I've yet to walk into a better book haunt, but I'm prejudiced--I don't think there is a better independent bookstore.
Working for a major airline certainly has its advantages--including free plane tickets. My recipe for reviving a stagnant love life involves a lovely bookish lady (yet to be named, if at all), two round-trip plane tickets, and an evening at the Tattered Cover.
That's the beginning of a perfect date, yes?

That would work for me. Does it come with dinner and a cocktail or 4? A girl's gotta eat ya know.
Sigh. I know how you feel. My fav bookstore ever was Elliot's Bookstore in Baton Rouge, it actually closed down while I still lived there right after B&N moved into the neighborhood. It was a lovely place, and I haven't found any like it since.

I always take the girl out for drinks. But instead of flowers I give em' a used book. It's unique. Flowers are the same. Gah. I have a theory that most women hate flowers.

Bookie: Of course it comes with dinner and drinks! A man's gotta eat, too.
Adam: That's interesting, giving a date a used book. I may have to steal your idea, because I think it's awesome. What authors, genres, or titles would you recommend? I'd be terrified of giving her a book and, in the process, giving her the wrong impression about my intentions, motives, or personality. "The Silence of the Lambs" probably wouldn't go over well, but neither would Jane Austen, I imagine.

I always give a copy of 'The Stranger'. I tell them it's my favorite book and that if they want to date me they'll have to read it. They think it's cute.
Posted by: Adam S. | August 03, 2007 at 07:53 PM
Brandon, I think you and Adam should get together and co-write "Wooing the Bookish Lady" or some such title. It'd be a refreshing change from "He's Just Not That Into You." Your date plan sounds perfect. Food, booze, books. Good luck!
Posted by: Nonanon | August 04, 2007 at 11:04 AM
Adam: Thanks for the suggestion. Incidentally, "The Stranger" is one of my favorite books.
Nonanon: I think you're on to something. We'd surely have a bestseller on our hands. What say you, Adam? We could team up on a blog and write about ideas, tips, and experiences! And then, when we garner a sizable audience, we could take the route of "Girl With a One-Track Mind" and simply publish all the posts.

Wow, yeah, I'd say that would rev the love life. Nothing like bookish rendezvous!

As soon as you guys get that site up, I'll be the first one there.
By the way, I've only been to Tattered Cover Bookstore once and it is, hands down, the best bookstore I've ever been in. I see why you miss it. Heck, even I miss it. Go figure.

It seems like an idea worth pursuing. However, I'm in the midst of moving from Louisville to Chicago, so this might not be the best time.

'Wooing the Bookish Lady' is a fabulous idea for a book. You guys should really do it. And please give me a call if you need an illustrator!
I actually wrote and illustrated a humour book entitled 'Books Are Better Than Men' (sorry guys – all tongue in cheek, really!), but couldn't find a publisher for the concept (too niche-oriented, yada yada). I'm in the process of self-publishing the idea). Here's the post that started it all:

Also, you are right about giving ladies books instead of flowers. I even wrote a post about that, last year on Valentine's Day:

Andi: It's a sexy idea, isn't it? And I don't care what anyone says; a girl reading a good book is sexier than a girl in a mini-skirt and heels.
J.S.: Thanks for your support. We'd probably need a woman's voice as well--when it comes to wooing women, I'll take a woman's advice before I take a man's advice--so maybe, when Adam's ready, you'd like to join us in this endeavor. And yes, the Tattered Cover is the best bookish haunt ever. Every book lover needs to visit it at least once before he or she dies.
Adam: I wish you luck with the move. If you're interested in doing this, let me know when you're ready and we'll start bouncing around ideas for blog titles and whatnot. I think it's a great idea, because it'd be different from your usual literary blog.
Patricia: You'll be the first (and only!) illustrator we call on should this thing ever take off. (It seems to be snowballing, so there may be no backing down now.) And I'd like to read your book. No offense taken with the title--in most cases, I say that books are better (or at least more interesting) than women. "Omigod! Shoe sale! Brandon, SHOE SALE!" "Wha? Sorry--dozed off."

I've been think and the idea certainly has merit. I was at work today and thought up the perfect title for the blog "Hitting On Girls in Bookstores".
What do you think?
Posted by: Adam S. | August 09, 2007 at 11:49 PM
"Hitting On Girls in Bookstores" ... I like it. You can't miss the point of the blog with a title like that. At the same time, I wonder if we could broaden our horizons, so to speak. Could "bookstores" be too limiting? We should play with your theme--blunt, humorous, with no bullshit--and see if we can come up with something that encompasses all spectrums of the literary landscape: what to read if you want to impress a literary guy or girl, what literature says about romance, what sections of the store to hang out in if you're looking for a girl/guy, and other things like that. I also think we should bring a girl or two on board; this can be sort of a discussion blog, and the girls can offer their own advice and experiences.
We have some time, at least until you're settled, so we should discuss titles, other authors, and blog platforms in this thread.
Posted by: Brandon | August 10, 2007 at 11:44 AM
I like that. A girl to blog with. That could work.
"Bookstores" might be limiting, but I think it gets the basic point across. It doesn't sound right with the "library" or the "morgue". Besides, guys can hit on girls anywhere, and our focus point is the bookstore: that's where I meet a majority of people.
And we could point out what books would most likely grab a person's attention, how to approach said person, what if you're at work? The applications and the advice that we can provide could be endless.

You guys are knocking my socks off. Camus instead of flowers, whoa Nelly, cool your jets speed racer, lets have dinner first.
Seriously, the books soounds like a great idea. Go for it.
